Emergency Medical Supplies Such As Wound Care Could Save Your Life Or Someone Else's!

Like a Chef armed with their best knives and an apron, an emergency medical team is going to be equipped with certain kinds of emergency medical supplies that are designed in order to save your life or someone else's life. These items can also be utilized to keep them safe as well. For a regular person such as yourself, this can somewhat be scary to think about. I still get chills every time I hear a fire engine or ambulance!

But after you really sit down and think about it and realize what these items can be used to do - I think you will begin to get over your fears and realize that the EMT supplies and EMS gear that emergency professionals have isn't something to be scared of. In fact, it's something that you should learn to appreciate! These are people that are in this line of work because they enjoy the people they work with and saving people from some pretty situations.

A lot of the items and emergency medical supplies that they use are actually quite common and could be the same thing that you have right now in your own first aid kit at home. For example, some of the most common items, especially in Home First Aid kits, are things such as wound care. These specialty wound care products are specifically meant to treat for burns and cuts, but can also be used for drainage, absorbing blood, composite dressings, etc.

You have everything from compression bandages and foam dressings to Hydrocolloid Alginate dressings and Sodium Chloride dressings available to you. Some of these are going to simply be used to "cover" up and aid in the compression of the area where the wound is. While others will actually be used to keep the pain at a minimal degree. Read More!

A Blog about the different kinds of Emergency Vehicles?

As with all other professionals that are emergency teams, each one is going to have its own specialized vehicle along for its own specific reasons. In the same way that you wouldn't drive a hatchback in the Indy 500, you wouldn't ride a police bicycle to a fire! There are many emergency vehicles to list, but a few different ones are bomb disposal, SWAT vehicles, mountain rescue, search and rescue, hazardous waste materials and police motorcycles!

Some emergency response vehicles are likely to be equipped with EMS gear, EMT supplies or emergency medical supplies such as sonic and visible warning devices such lights and sirens which are designed placed on the vehicle in order to ease along their motility through traffic to reach their specific "landing-place", and to provide protection on the location. Also, depending on certain laws in certain cities and states, you will oftentimes find that local laws that are required for other non-emergency vehicles are going to be "waved off" when it comes to emergency vehicles.

For example, a lot of times you will see an ambulance or fire rescue zooming through red lights! This allowed in most cases! You will also find that there are oftentimes rules in which YOU the civilian must follow when it comes to an emergency vehicle. For instance, in some states if you see or hear an emergency vehicle behind you its required that you pull over on the side of the road, while in other states pulling over for something like this is simply noted as being courteous! Household Emergency Medical Supplies For Your Family

Accidents happen - its common sense. But in order to keep yourself safe it's always a good idea to keep a first aid kit in your house along with other necessary emergency medical supplies. Some of the supplies you are going to be packing into your first aid kit are even going to be the same things that any EMT supplies kit or EMS gear team would carry. These are emergency medical supplies that could end up saving YOUR life or someone around you! Obviously some of these items are no-brainers such as gauze, bandages and scissors, but there may be some other products you haven't thought of or you think you might not need such as a CPR kit.

This might seem scary, but once you take a few classes on how to do CPR (which is something you will definitely need to do), you will probably end up being really thankful you decided to put a CPR kit inside your home. More than 3000 people die from choking every single year - most of these are children. We all know kids will put almost anything in their mouths, but they also can choke on other things as well such as food that wasn't properly cut up or chewed. Frankly, I would hope that every parent would put aside their frightening thoughts about what could happen, and instead be prepared.

Better to be safe than sorry, especially when it could have been helped in the first place! Between a first aid kit and a CPR kit, this should at least put your mind to rest a little more than it was before! Also, always make sure to keep any and all of your kits fully stocked! If you live in earthquake states or zones you can also get an earthquake kit. If you live in a section of the country where forest fires often happen, you can get a forest fire evac kit. There is always a solution, you just need to do a little research or visit us at www.DixieEMS.com today! Read More!

The Most Basic EMS Gear and EMT Supplies For Your First Aid Kit

When it comes to any profession, there are going to be basic supplies and gear you will need to have in order to do your job. In the case of EMS gear or EMT supplies there are a few basic emergency medical supplies you should have on hand - both professionally and personally. A few of the basics are not only going to be for the safety of others, but yourself as well. For example, while a flashlight is a terrific thing to have in order to illuminate objects in the dark, this can also be used as a weapon if the time had come where you needed it.

Now when it comes to first aid kits you should have some VERY basic wound preparation supplies such as absorbent compress dressings, adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipe packets, pair of non-latex gloves, hydro-cortisone ointment packets and scissors. The non-latex gloves are of the utmost importance! This is going to obviously keep your hands clean and free of chemicals, blood and other liquids.

The reason for non-latex is sort of obvious, some people are actually allergic to the chemicals in latex, so it's best to just be safe and use non-latex instead. Also, some people that wear latex oftentimes get rashes and such on their hands. This is not only the basics for an EMS or EMT, but as suggested by the Red Cross it's also items that a household should have in their basic first aid kit as well! Hey, if it's good enough for the professionals, it's good enough for me!

Get some Kolling sensation into your bandage

There are many different methods to relieve pain and reduce swelling, but there is one way that I believe is the best and most effective. It is Koldcare Koldwrap and it combines the valuable use of a bandage and the wonders of a soothing cool sensation.

The bandage is made of an exclusive formulation of gelled water and elastic foam material. When the two combined and the bandage is wrapped around an injured area, the gel-imbedded material evaporates water to effectively cool the injury. The cooling effect will stay for hours and there are no dangers that are associated with ice application such as tissue damage from excessive cold.

This wrap can even be refrigerated for extra coolness effect and can ease pain and swelling due to sprains, bruises, insect bites, nosebleeds, toothaches, muscle cramps, migraine headaches, arthritis, tendonitis, and carpal tunnel.

The benefits of Koldwrap bandage line:
  • Wraps completely around the injured area to effectively cool from all sides
  • Can be worn directly against the skin
  • Conforms to all body contours
  • Not wet or messy
  • Nontoxic and nonirritant
  • Cools by evaporation
  • Can be refrigerated for enhanced cooling
  • Cost-effective to use
  • Reusable
  • Recommended by athletic trainers, physicians and physical therapists
  • Gel is 96% water
  • Time-released cooling effect lasts for hours

When in need for emergency reference there is only one place to turn to

This is a handy little device I always carry around with me, it’s called the Pedi-Wheel and it’s a convenient pocket reference tool that actually puts the most vital pediatric data at my fingertips. All the information I need in order to successfully perform during a pediatric emergency is on this sturdy reference guide.

How does it work? Well, I turn the dial to point on my patient’s age on one side and I get tons of helpful information such as: average weight, blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, suggested sizes for ET tubes and laryngoscope blades, as well as the average length of a properly inserted ET tube at the teeth or gum line.

On the other side I can choose the patient’s weight and quickly find all sorts of pre-calculated doses including: Adenosine, Atropine, Bretylium, Diazepam, Epinephrine, Lidocaine and Narcan.

How to treat minor burns?

Minor burns, which usually include first and second degree burns can be treated at home, if they involve only a small part of the body, not larger than a couple of inches. How to treat a minor burn?
  1. Remove all kinds of jewelry surrounding the wound.
  2. Soak the burn area in cool water for a couple of minutes. Don’t use ice. Cold water will help remove the heat and ease the pain.
  3. Though it is common to use butter as first-aid remedy, it is not recommended to do so as it could cause permanent damage to the skin.
  4. After cleaning the area, you should apply antibiotic ointment, and cover the wound with a bandage.
  5. Taking an over the counter pain reliever can also help to ease the pain.
First and second degree burns can happen around the house or outside. They usually heal in a few days but you should always watch for infection, swelling or fever. Remember to get medical help if any side effects occur or if the burn is in a sensitive area such as hands, feet, gentiles, or joints.

It's always to be prepared for any burn emergency with Special Burn Kits. At www.DixieEms.com you can find various emergency and burn first aid kits with a combination of dressings, wraps, blankets and Burn Jel. Read More!

Venipuncture and Injection Training Arm. Feels real - right down to the fingerprint

I remember that back in the day, when my wife was a training paramedic, she used to come back home with blue arms and swollen veins. Everyone thought she was being abused… well, she was sort of. You see, the students had to practice venipuncture on each other, and it takes some time until you know how to find a vein.

But today, when my wife teaches her students, she uses an injection training arm. It’s simple and easy to use and it’s the ideal way to teach venipuncture and injection techniques without taking unnecessary risks. Before the training arm, you had to find willing volunteers (!) but now you can avoid patient injury and liability, while the students are learning new procedures.
She brought one of these back home, she always wanted to teach me her stuff and man this thing feels real – right down the fingerprint! The skin actually rolls as you palpate the vein and the characteristic “pop” can be felt as the needle penetrates the vein. Augh…

Learn First Aid ABC and save a life

In reality, we have to be ready for any possible scenario and know exactly what to do when we encounter an emergency.

This is why it is important to know the first aid ABC. It is an easy way to remember the basic steps a rescuer needs to go through when checking a victim.

ABC of First Aid:

A stands for Airway
B stands for Breathing
C for Circulations

As we mentioned, these are the most important indicators to check. If the victim is responsive, try and speak to speak and see if he or she can answer so you’d know the airway is clear. If the airway is blocked, roll the victim on his back while safely securing the head. You can then clear his airway by opening the mouth.

When the victim is breathing but unconscious, you want to roll him on the side while securing the neck and head, and open the mouth in order to make sure that the airway will not be blocked by the tongue. If the victim is unconscious put your hand or ear near his mouth and check for breathing. You can also place a small mirror to see breath. If there are no signs of breathing, don’t wait for the ambulance and start performing CPR. C for circulation means checking the victim’s pulse.

Everything you need for Casualty Simulation

Being ready for emergency is always important in any given setting. Training in basic emergency and first-aid can be crucial for military and official personnel or even civilian training in the neighborhood or factory.

Dealing with emergencies can be much more efficient if people are knowledgeable and properly trained to assist their co-workers, friends and family. Experts believe that while teaching basic first-aid, realism is very important. When people know what to expect, they can function better in time of need and one way to achieve realism is by using mannequins and make-up.

The Simulaids Basic Casualty Simulation Kit is the most economical way to get started in simulated injuries. Re-usable wounds and refillable accessories let you practice bandaging and splinting techniques repeatedly. It includes wounds such as compound fracture Tibia and 12 assorted stick-on lacerations and open fractures as well as coagulant makeup blood, casualty simulation wax, 2 wood tongue depressors and much more accessories.

The Multiple Casualty Simulation Kit is more versatile than the basic kit. This unit gives you more complex wounds for testing higher levels of skill in bandaging and patient care, while keeping initial expenditures low. The kit comes in a heavy duty plastic tool box with a lift out tray for your convenience.

The Answer to CPR Anxieties

Dealing with emergencies can be quite stressful, but the rescuer must be in complete focus. Using a defibrillator should help you save a life, not get in your way. I found it hard to believe when Phillips introduced a home defibrillator that is “easy to use” but when we examined the HeartStart FRx Defibrillator we discovered that saving a life can be very simple.

This AED delivers a highly effective defibrillation shock that is also gentle to the heart. SMART Analysis is a proven Philips technology for heart rhythm assessment. SMART ensures that FRx Defibrillator only shocks when it should. SMART Analysis automatically assesses the victim’s heart rhythm and is designed not to deliver a shock unless the rhythm is determined to be shockable — even if the shock button is pressed.

The AED also guides rescuers through CPR, easily activated by pressing the blue button. The AED features a built in voice prompts clearly instruct you during use which makes this a handy AED around the house or office. A defibrillator that can help you save a life, in those crucial minuets before the ambulance arrives

How to use a Kendrick Extrication Device

KED or the Kendrick Extrication Device, is an important tool that helps to remove a patient safely from a motor vehicle. The KED stabilizes the victim’s head, back, shoulders and torso while immobilizing the patient’s ability to move the head, neck or spine.
The Ferno K.E.D for example, is a versatile, improved means of immobilizing and extricating patients from auto accidents or confined spaces. The wrap-around design provides horizontal flexibility for easy application and vertical rigidity for support of the spine, neck, and head during extrication. The Ferno K.E.D immobilizes torso, head and neck, enabling prompt extrication while minimizing risks of further injury.

Another K.E.D is the time-proven design of the K.O.D.E. (Kendrick's Other Device For Extrication). This legendary, industry standard design encloses the torso and cervical spine in a rigid frame of multiple vertical battens, providing horizontal flexibility and vertical rigidity for maximum support during extrication.

Remember that using KED is a complicated procedure which requires training. The famous mnemonic which helps a rescuer ensure that the straps are secured in order is “My Baby Looks Hot Tonight” in the order of Middle, Bottom, Legs, Head and Top.

"Logrolling" and the Ferno EXL Scoop Stretcher

When victims suffer from a spinal injury, they need to be moved onto a stretcher. This is a very complicated maneuver which requires training by professionals. This procedure is called “log rolling” and it usually takes three or more people in order to preform this maneuver in a safe manner.

When the victim is lying on his back, one person should hold the victim’s head with both hands on each side of the head and make sure it stays stabilized. The other rescuers should position themselves at the abdominal area and near the feet.

While maintaining spinal control, the three rescuers will roll the victim on his side, place the stretcher and lower the victim back onto the stretcher.

This next video can be a visual aid to better understand the maneuver:

When using Ferno’s Scoop EXL Stretcher, the need for log-rolling is eliminated and cervical spine movements decrease drastically.
It’s made from lightweight, high-impact composite materials with two hinged, interlocking pieces that allow operators to gently scoop up a patient without having to roll them, decreasing movement to the cervical spine. Head section recessed to maintain proper cervical alignment and the stretcher supports the victim in the position found, reducing risk of further injury.

Every 25 seconds, someone is burned or scalded in their home or at work. Are you prepared?

What is so special about Water-Jel products is that they are consistent with both wet and dry burn treatment since they stop the burning process, cool the burned area, relieve pain, prevent further injury and do not contribute to hypothermia.

Take a look at this brave CEO, who doesn’t mind putting himself in the line of “fire”

Which Sunscreen is right for me and my family?

There are numerous sunblock and sunscreen lotions to choose from, raging from SPF 15 to SPF 85 or more. So which one should you rub on? Actually, skin professional tend to divide sunscreen lotions into two groups – the ones that are under SPF 50 and the ones that are above. The first category is for people with normal skin, and the second category is for people who are more likely to develop skin cancer, or people with light skin who get burned easily.

When we go to the beach, or take a day trip, we tend to apply only a very thin lotion of sunblock, which means that if we use a little amount of SPF 15 we actually use something more like SPF 3 – that is the reason why using SPF 30 to 50 is recommended by skin specialists. When buying a sunscreen, make sure it has a UVA protection and try to apply it generously, about 30 minuets before you leave home, so it will have time to sink in. Repeat every two hours without skipping sensitive areas like the ears, feet and scalp!

Thinking about an Aspirin a day? Ask your Doctor first

Aspirin was introduced more than 100 years ago, as an analgesic that helps relieving minor aches and pains and reduce fever. Later on, it became a long term aid known to reduce the risk of heart attacks and repair damaged blood vessels which turned Aspirin into the most widely used and famous medicine around the globe.

An aspirin a day keeps the doctor away? Maybe. Aspirin was called a Wonder Drug and proved amazing abilities in keeping the blood from clotting which can help prevent stroke or heart attacks. If you’re thinking about taking a daily dose of aspirin, talk to your doctor first, and see if you have a risk factor of having a stroke or heart disease.

Remember that aspirin, just like any drug, can have some serious side effects. Should you take aspirin? Maybe this short video can help:

The best and easiest place in our body to check the pulse rate is the wrist. All you will need is your fingers and a watch.

Sit comfortably and place your arm on a rigid surface, palm facing up, while making sure that the elbow is parallel with your heart. In order to find the pulse, use your right hand and place it on the right side of the wrist. Press down and count the beats for one consecutive minute.

Save a Life: Learn Basic CPR

It’s not enough to look briefly at the CPR poster at your local burger joint. When the crucial time comes, you should be prepared and at have the basic knowledge – which can help you save a life! CPR - Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation - is a basic manual method to keep the heart pumping in an emergency situation.

CPR should be preformed when a victim is unconscious and doesn’t have a pulse, or does not breathe. Before you start, make sure that someone calls 911. If you are alone and the victim is an adult, call 911 first. If it is a child, you should perform CPR for two minutes and call the emergency services. In most cases, a 911 representative can help you with CPR instructions.

In order to clear the victim’s airway, tilt the head back. Pinch the victim’s nose and make sure no air will escape during the procedure.

Using a CPR kit mask, cover the victims mouth with yours and breathe twice, making sure that the chest is rising. Each breathe should be approximately one second.

If the patient does not respond to the artificial breathing and the chest does not rise, place both your hands over the victim’s chest, when the middle fingers are inline with the nipples. Push down fast, at a rate of 100 beats/minute for 30 times, and repeat the artificial breathing. Continue with two breathes and 30 pumps until the victim starts to breath and help arrives.

If the victim is a child use one hand and only two fingers if performing CPR on an infant.

Keeping a CPR kit is always important. An Ambu Res-Cue Key CPR Face Shield for example is an easy to use and inexpensive CPR barrier with a one-way valve that prevents direct contact with the patients mouth, nose, and face. Hot Thermometry News

Checking a patient’s temperature is one of the first things you take care of. Keeping up with a fever is a basic requirement and it should be done properly. It may seem simple; it only takes a thermometer and a couple of minuets, but just like any other technology in the field, there are some interesting developments in thermometry. The mercury-based thermometers that our moms used during our childhood were found to be too risky and mercury was replaced with other heat sensitive materials or digital electronic thermometers. Although temperatures are still taken in the old fashioned way (oral, rectal or under the arm) some new thermometers only require a gentle stroke on the forehead. The TemporalScanner Thermometer for example, is a totally non-invasive system with advanced infrared technology providing maximum ease of use with quick, consistently accurate measurements. It captures naturally emitted heat from the skin above the temporal artery 1,000 times a second, and then gives a reading of the most accurate temperature.

If you are interested to learn more about the newest thermometry technology available, check out Dixie EMS Supply.
